She/Her - Why did you create this work?
"Impure Vessels" is a series of seven illustrated clay vessels exploring how women are portrayed in Oral Torah literature—texts shaped by a male perspective for male audiences for centuries. Drawing from the Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash Rabbah, and Mishneh Torah, the project aims to showcase these ancient texts while reflecting the complex realities women face today. - How were your illustrations used?
Given the complexity and often challenging nature of the theme, I aimed to create vibrant, eye-catching illustrations that would captivate the audience's attention. By using bold colors, dynamic compositions and occasionally incorporating dark humor, I aimed to create a visual experience that not only draws people in but also encourages a more profound connection with the subject matter. - What materials and techniques did you use?
The primary technique used was hand-drawn illustration with acrylic paint on clay vessels. I chose vessels because they have been a storytelling medium across cultures for thousands of years. The choice of clay is also significant, as it is often considered an impure material in Judaism. - Was this project commissioned?
