Why did you choose to enter this work?
This series is a visual memoir recounting my experience growing up and marks my first attempt etching. I am proud of it so I decided to take a shot entering it to WIA.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
It represents ME and my own story. When I created this series, I made it look like a series of movie clips shuffling through. I am convinced that it is relatable and emotion-evoking.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I heard long ago that shortlisted artists have the honor to be featured on AOI website with a detailed introduction. I value this opportunity of promoting myself and my work.

Where do you usually work?
Most of my works, including this series, are made in etching, so I mostly work in a printmaking studio with various tools, acid pools, and presses. I enjoy making my hands dirty while creating.

How long did it take to complete your project?
About one month. It is a surprisingly short period of time for etching, because I upgraded my working process by planing the shadow grids ahead and using a polishing machine.

What is your dream commission?
I do not have preferences on topics, but would love to see the applications of my works to settings other than on printing paper. I am excited for challenging projects like murals and packages.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I like to draw characters and things with geometric or pattern-wise beauty, such as Chinese lion dance, guitar, and playground facilities.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Do not let the topic restrain your execution. Whether doing a personal project or a commission, think it in your way and make it your own story. Your perspective matters a lot.

What are your plans for the future?
I am going to study at the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Program at SVA. While in New York, I plan to continue my etching practice for personal works and seek for free-lance opportunities.
