Why did you choose to enter this work?
I had so much fun creating this story about this strong-willed sooty crow, that I really wanted to share it, and this competition was a perfect way to do that.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The story and the characters I created, especially Sooty Jo, who’s a lot like me when I was young, and curious…I still am curious, but sadly no longer young!
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Being able to share the story of Sooty Jo with many people, and the way it showcases how Jo is a loved character that could potentially be realised into a published children’s picture book.
Where do you usually work?
In my animation studio in Chippenham, on a lovely avocado green 1970’s architects’ desk that belonged to my father-in-law. I work both traditionally in mixed media and digitally in procreate.
How long did it take to complete your project?
Approximately four months in bursts over the course of a year.
What is your dream commission?
To write and illustrate my own picture book.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Kid like animal and bird characters with my stabilo woody pencil.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Just have fun with your drawings and story ideas, if you’re not having fun, it won’t show through in your work, don’t take it too seriously, be a kid again and play.
What are your plans for the future?
To become a published picture book author and illustrator.
