Why did you choose to enter this work?
My hunch was that Katy and her story would resonate so this competition was a great excuse to put my illustrations to the test.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I think we all want to be a bit more like Katy! She’s sparky and unapologetically herself - even when faced with resistance. I think my illustrations feel like ‘her’ world which I love.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It’s a huge boost! It's wonderful to see my first story get out into the world - it makes me really excited about developing the other ideas I have and to see where Katy will go next.
Where do you usually work?
I usually work at my living room table. I’m lucky that it’s lovely and light and surrounded by my lovely, lanky yucca plants. I also love working on my iPad - which can be anywhere. Sometimes in bed!
How long did it take to complete your project?
I did my first sketches of Katy in the Autumn of 2023 and then worked on the story in little bursts since. I don’t see it as finished (yet) as I’m hoping to work it up with a great publisher.
What is your dream commission?
Something with a great character (or characters), heaving with life, colour and humour. It’s got to be fun!
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
People! Even better if they are in a kind of interesting place or have some interesting objects around them. I’ve not tried animals much yet but would like to.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Draw what excites you. Be patient and try not to get too bogged down in worrying about the work you are making now. If you don’t like it keep drawing. It will get better!
What are your plans for the future?
To get this book published! And to continue working on some other exciting ideas I have.
