2025 | Highly Commended + Longlist + Shortlist | Book Covers | New Talent

Award Year
2025

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I think it captures the feel and atmosphere of emigrating to New York in the 1920s. I mean the struggles and hopes people had to face, instead of the "swinging 20s" many people connect with this era.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I worked and changed this image so many times until I finally changed the narrative perspective - as if one is looking through a train window from the outside - which gives it depth.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
To be amongst all the gorgeous entries is very encouraging. I am glad I carried on working on this cover as it was challenging for me.

Where do you usually work?
I work on an old draughting table I found in the basement of my old flat share where I lived when I first came to London.

How long did it take to complete your project?
It's hard to say as I did research sketches about 1920s New York first, watched two documentaries about this era and kept changing this image. I'd say the whole process took me four weeks.

What is your dream commission?
I would love to do more book cover work if possible. I enjoy delving into a completely different topic, setting or era every time I used to assist art directors on film and this reminds me of it.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Atmosphere, different and perhaps quirky characters in an urban environment, emotions, movement.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Have bucket-loads of patience. Take little steps slowly. Stay positive.

What are your plans for the future?
Draw more, experiment more.
