Why did you choose to enter this work?
It's one of my most personal works, and one where I join children's literature, illustration and animation. I feel I gave it all my best in this project.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
This film is an adaptation of the first children's book I wrote and illustrated myself. It was an interesting adventure to try to use the watercolour style of the book in animation, and I loved it.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
The fact that a project that I originally conceived for my kids is appreciated by others whose opinion I deeply respect.
Where do you usually work?
I work at home, either in a small division or in the living room. I am not able to work in an office, I've tried. My setup is pretty portable, I can work while travelling.
How long did it take to complete your project?
It took 9 months to do the short film, but I had the book as a style guide. The book took 6 months to make.
What is your dream commission?
Right now, anyone who wants to publish the books I have in my head. But any commission that values my input and connects with my worldview and interests is great.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
My kids. My wife. The sea. Trees.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don't be afraid to make your own mistakes. Don't waste your life doing other people's mistakes. Have a small portable sketchbook where you draw frequently without trying to be good. Read books.
What are your plans for the future?
Do a pilot for an animated series (in pre-production), find time to do the 5 picture books I have in my head, do three illustrated books I've already committed to.
